Health Improvement Benefits help support your health and wellbeing with benefits for certain preventative products and services, and are available on selected ahm extras covers.

What you can claim
What you can claim
Depending on your level of cover, you could claim on:
- Yoga and Pilates (from 1 April 2026)
- Cancer Council UV products (sunscreen, swimwear, hats and sunglasses)
- Exercise classes and personal training
- Weight loss classes and courses
- Swimming lessons for children 0-17 years
- Stress management courses
- Disease management association fees
- Preventative tests, scans and screenings
- Health checks
- Quit smoking courses and replacement therapy, such as patches, gum, lozenges and inhalers

Important info: Under the Private Health Insurance Act, we can only pay benefits for exercise classes, yoga, Pilates, weight loss classes/programs and swimming lessons to assist with the management and treatment of already identified health conditions or diagnosed mental health conditions, not for general fitness or wellbeing.

What you’ll need to make your claim
Your receipts, plus some services need a little extra info before we can pay benefits for health improvement.
If your claim relates to managing an already identified condition with an exercise class or program, you’ll need a Health Improvement Benefit Approval Form completed by your health provider.
Examples of recognised health providers include medical practitioners, dietitians, exercise physiologists, physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, occupational therapists, psychologists, diabetes educators or Aboriginal health workers.

Step 1: Download the form
Grab a copy of the Health Improvement Benefit Approval Form and fill out your details.
Step 2: Take the form to your GP or other health provider
Ask your health provider to help complete the form confirming the condition the program/class is treating.
Step 3: Submit the form
Via the ahm app
To upload your completed Health Improvement Benefits form, click on the Account tab and select Documents. Then click on Upload documents and select Health improvement benefits approval form from the dropdown list. Finally, select your completed health improvement benefits form and click Upload.
Via your ahm online account
To upload your completed Health Improvement Benefits form, click on the documents tab and select Upload documents. Then select Health improvement benefit approval form from the dropdown list. Finally, select your completed HIB form and click Upload.
Important info: We’ll let you know once the form is successfully processed, and it will remain valid on your membership for 2 years.
Step 4: Make a claim
You can make a claim and submit your receipts through your online account, or via the ahm app.
Note: you only need to follow steps 1-3 if you’re claiming for exercise classes/programs personal training, gym memberships or swimming lessons.
Before You Claim: Check Your Cover
Not all extras products include cover for Health Improvement Benefits. Make sure you check your product guide to see if Health Improvement Benefits are included on your policy, and for any waiting periods and annual limits.

Price reduced by an Australian Government Rebate of 24.118% (based on an age of under 65 years old, single income of $101,000 or less per year). Heads up, the income thresholds used to calculate the Australian Government Rebate (AGR) and Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) are changing from 1 July 2026, so your entitlement to the AGR may change after that date.
