Basic Hospital

Basic Hospital is designed for younger people less likely to need full cover for certain procedures and treatments. It pays a minimal (default) private hospital benefit for some services like pregnancy, heart, dialysis and hip and knee joint replacements.

Plus it includes access to several disease prevention and chronic disease management programs to help you achieve and maintain good health. A fixed co-payment applies. More on how the co-payment works.

What am I covered for?

• Medical gap (refer to the policy document for more information)
• Accommodation* – private or shared room
• Operating theatre*
• Intensive care*
• Palliative care
• Surgically implanted prostheses – we’ll cover the cost of any No Gap prostheses, and the minimum benefit for Gap Permitted prostheses
• Ambulance transport
• Travel and accommodation related to a hospitalisation (refer to the policy document for more information)
• Disease prevention, chronic disease management and hospital substitute programs

Restricted Services

We pay the default benefit only for restricted services and services not covered by Medicare in either a private or public hospital. Restricted services include:

• Cardio–thoracic procedures, including open heart and bypass surgery, and invasive cardiac procedures such as angiograms.
• Hip and knee joint replacements
• Pregnancy related services/obstetrics
• Assisted reproductive services (eg. IVF and GIFT Programs)
• Male and femal sterility reversals
• Dialysis
• Psychiatric Services
• Rehabilitation
• Cosmetic surgery where not considered medically necessary
• Services not covered by Medicare unless otherwise specified
• Services where Medicare do not pay a benefit (eg. where patient is not Medicare eligible)
