ahm has earned a reputation as an industry leader in providing a full range of health insurance products and customised health management programs. From a small club formed in 1971, ahm is now one of the top 8 health insurance providers with more than 167,000 policies across Australia. We are proudly Australian and are committed to responsiveness, flexibility and innovation.
History
In 1971, ahm’s founder Roy Johnson was inspired to establish a health fund in Wollongong that cared for its members after the death of his daughter Lynne from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
The fund, then known as Government Employees Medical & Hospital Club, started with just 511 members. Roy retired from his club in 1986, having established a membership base of over 40,000 across NSW.
Through the years the Club became known as Government Employees Health Fund and added a number of other brands including Illawarra Health Fund, Senior Advantage, Mutual Health and Australian Country Health. These funds operated under the organisational umbrella of Australian Health Management Group (AHMG). By 2001 AHMG's combined membership rose to over 120,000.
2005 saw the merger of all these brands into a single national brand – ahm. The brand had developed a reputation for excellent customer service and satisfaction. In 2009 ahm became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Medibank Group.
40 years on ahm is a leading health insurer caring for the health of more than 360,000 people Australia wide and employing over 560 staff.
A pioneer in the provision of health management programs, medical research and innovative services including online and telephone claiming, ahm Health Insurance still embodies Roy’s founding vision of member care and ongoing wellness.
Corporate governance
ahm is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Medibank Private and the Medibank Board is responsible for the corporate governance and oversight of ahm.

Private Health Insurance Code of Conduct
ahm was instrumental in the development of the Private Health Insurance Code of Conduct and was one of the first funds to enrol as a signatory. The Code assists consumers by providing clear information and transparency when dealing with their health fund. The Code of Conduct 'Tick' appears on our communications and indicates that we comply with the code.
