Alternative to a Hospital Admission

Going to hospital - is there an alternative?

Admission to hospital is essential in some cases. However if your doctor agrees that it’s clinically appropriate, you may be able to avoid hospital altogether. Under our Alternatives to Admission program, we work with your doctor to put in place a comprehensive individual care plan for you.

How do we help you?

Our program co-ordinators can arrange for treatment and services to be provided at your home or an assisted living facility during the period of your acute illness. The program is run under the supervision of your treating doctor. Telephone support is available throughout the program. Services include:

  • Home nursing
  • Personal care
  • Domestic services
  • Transport
  • Carer for children.

Importantly, ahm covers 100% of the cost of the program when you have hospital cover. Any information you provide to us is kept confidential and doesn't affect insurance premiums or benefits.

Who can enrol on this program?

You are eligible to participate in this program if:

  • Your doctor considers it appropriate for you to be treated at home
  • You are over 18 years old
  • You have hospital cover and have served your waiting periods.

Note: These programs are only available in participating hospitals so call us on 134 246 to check eligibility before you need to be admitted.
The care programs tailored by ahm’s health consultants only include ahm recognised providers.

Peter's story

Peter* developed a serious blood infection and with his doctor's consent, he chose to stay home rather than being admitted to hospital. Peter received daily visits from a registered nurse to administer intravenous antibiotics. This meant Peter was able to receive the care he needed at home without the inconvenience of going into hospital.

"I'm sure my recovery was accelerated by not having to be admitted to hospital. Help was only a phone call away and I had the added security of a daily visit from a nurse."
